Minnesota Farmers Union State Fair Project

Remodeled Minnesota Farmers Union State Fair Building Goes High Volume

A major remodeling at the Minnesota State Fair Farmers Union Building by CNH Architects brings high hopes to educate more fairgoers about the $75 billion farming industry, while enjoying foods sourced from across the state.  Thousands sipped on specialty coffees, delicious BLT’s and a new cobbler dessert.

JBL Companies was hired as the owner’s representative to coordinate the entire team from the architects to contractors.  JBL was responsible for running all construction meetings, working out a site design, condition issues and making sure everything stayed on track for the shop to open in time for the State Fair.

The serving area was improved to serve more customers, maximizing the flow and reducing the amount of steps for servers. Stainless steel countertops are reminiscent of dairy facilities, with recycled barnwood used as facing and barn and shed elements behind the counter to give an agricultural feel. There were numerous design decisions to make for a relatively small area.

Operating since the 1950’s and perhaps best known for its yardsticks, the Farmers Union is now more well known for its coffee.  It has chosen a new design interacted with a food truck and service provided by Birchwood Café in Minneapolis. It’s located at 1635 Dan Patch Avenue, at the corner of Cosgrove Street, near the traditional fair entrance off of Snelling Avenue.

Heirloom Tomato and Sweet Corn BLT At The MN Farmers Union Coffee Shop
Rick Nelson Star Tribune, OCTOBER 17, 2018
“The BLT is God’s gift to sandwiches. In the hands of Birchwood Cafe chef Marshall Paulsen — and his vast network of Minnesota organic farmers — it’s elevated into a heaven-sent fair experience. No detail is left to chance in this ingenious and labor-intensive effort, from the swipes of basil-kale-sunflower seed pesto and chipotle-fueled sweet corn purée, right down to the sturdy focaccia, baked by Baker’s Field Flour & Bread in Minneapolis. Truly spectacular. $12.”
